BMW history

 

The BMW Group is a German automobile manufacturer that produces luxury vehicles and motorcycles. Founded in 1916, BMW initially focused on airplane engines and later expanded into the production of automobiles.

BMW's early history was marked by a focus on aviation technology. The company was initially called Rapp Motorenwerke and was founded by Karl Rapp. In 1917, the company was renamed Bayerische Motoren Werke (BMW), which translates to Bavarian Motor Works. During World War I, BMW produced airplane engines for the German military.

After the war, BMW was prohibited from producing airplane engines and turned its attention to motorcycle production. The first BMW motorcycle, the R32, was introduced in 1923. It featured a unique opposed-twin engine design that became a hallmark of BMW motorcycles.

During the 1960s, BMW began producing the New Class of cars, which included the 1500, 1600, and 2002 models. These cars were popular for their sporty handling and sleek design, and helped establish BMW as a leading producer of high-performance cars.

In the 1970s, BMW introduced the 5 Series, which became one of the company's most successful models. The 5 Series was designed to be a luxury sports sedan, and set the standard for high-performance cars in its class.

During the 1980s and 1990s, BMW continued to expand its product lineup with the introduction of new models such as the 3 Series, 7 Series, and Z Series. The company also acquired the British carmaker Rover Group in 1994, but later sold it off due to financial difficulties.

In the 2000s, BMW introduced a number of innovative technologies, including its iDrive infotainment system and its EfficientDynamics system, which focused on improving fuel efficiency and reducing emissions.

Today, BMW is known for producing luxury vehicles and high-performance sports cars, including the iconic M Series. The company has continued to innovate with the introduction of electric and hybrid vehicles, such as the BMW i3 and the BMW i8.
